Background

Intuit wanted to create an explainer video highlighting their new offering that combines the benefits of QuickBooks and Mailchimp. The challenge was to tell a compelling story with a real small business owner, and distil program functionalities into a clear, digestible format for users—no small feat, given the robust nature of both platforms.

My Role

My Role

Alongside our director, Jacob Himnon, and direcotr of animation, Prajay Mehta, I was responsible for helping guide both the creative vision and the on-set execution for the live-action and animation components of the video. I oversaw every aspect of the project, from initial storyboarding through post-production, ensuring that every visual choice enhanced the core message.

Storyboarding & UI Abstraction

Storyboarding & UI Abstraction

I collaborated closely with our director and storyboard artist to shape the initial vision. Together, we mapped out the live-action sequences while simultaneously abstracting program flows and UI elements, translating them into simple, engaging visuals. The goal was to make something that felt visually dynamic but not overwhelming for viewers.

Pre-Production

Pre-Production

During pre-production, I developed the overall art direction, focusing heavily on the color stories for each scene. Every set, prop, and wardrobe choice was made to complement the QuickBooks x Mailchimp brand while making the explainer feel inviting and approachable. I worked with the heads of departments—set design, props, hair & makeup, and wardrobe—to ensure everyone was aligned before we hit production.

Production

On set, I directed the visual flow, providing on-the-spot creative and art direction across all aspects of the production. This included overseeing set dressing, working closely with the prop master, wardrobe stylist, hair & makeup, and our photographer to make sure everything laddered up to the unified aesthetic we had planned. Every detail mattered—whether it was the shade of a background prop or the texture of a costume, everything was chosen to reinforce the narrative.

Post-Production

Post-Production

In post, I worked alongside the director and our director of animation to marry the live-action with animation. This phase involved meticulously overseeing how UI abstractions were integrated into the live-action footage, ensuring a smooth and cohesive final product that stayed true to the original vision.
